It was a straightforward corporate event photography assignment.
One photographer.
One evening.
A full programme of speeches, dinner, performances and celebration.
The goal was simple - document the event properly while keeping the photographs natural, clean and consistent throughout the night.

Photographing a corporate anniversary
A company anniversary is more than another annual dinner. It represents years of growth, work, people and shared experiences.
For AGC Automotive Malaysia, this event marked their 8th anniversary, so the photography needed to capture more than what happened on stage.

The photographs also needed to show the people behind the company.
Colleagues spending time together.
Management interacting with employees.
Groups taking photographs.
Reactions during speeches.
People enjoying the performances.
Those smaller moments are often what give corporate event photography its personality.
One photographer, many moving parts
This event was covered by one photographer. That means constantly deciding where to be and what deserves attention.
During corporate events, several things can happen at the same time. There may be activity on stage while guests are reacting at their tables. A group may suddenly gather for a photograph. Someone important may enter the room. The emcee may move straight into the next programme.

Experience helps because you start to recognise how these events usually flow. Instead of simply reacting, you start anticipating.
That makes it easier to stay ahead of the programme and avoid missing key moments.
The usual ballroom lighting challenge
Like many annual dinner photography assignments, lighting was one of the main challenges. Ballroom lighting is usually created for ambience, not photography. You may have LED screens, coloured stage lights, spotlights and dim lighting around the tables.

It can look great in person but still create difficult conditions for photographs.
My approach was similar to my previous Reinhausen Asia-Pacific corporate dinner photography assignment. I used off-camera flash where needed, while keeping enough ambient light to retain the atmosphere of the ballroom.

I do not want the event to look like it was photographed in a completely different room.
The stage lighting, colours and mood are part of the night. The added lighting is there to give better skin tones, cleaner photographs and consistency.

Entertainment was a major part of the evening, with performances by Caliph Buskers and Ara Johari.
Live performances change the pace of an event. For a few minutes, corporate photography becomes closer to concert photography.

The lighting changes, people move faster and expressions become more animated.
For performances, I usually photograph both sides of the experience. The performer on stage and the audience enjoying the performance.
The audience matters just as much. Their reactions help show the atmosphere inside the ballroom and give the photographs more context.

A good corporate event gallery should not look like a collection of stage photographs.

Why annual dinner photography still matters
A corporate dinner may last only a few hours, but the photographs continue to be useful long after the event.
