The Reinhausen Asia-Pacific team comes together for a fun group photograph during the company dinner and award night.
When the venue lighting isn't enough, the photographer needs to bring the light.
A company dinner and award night is one of those corporate events where there are two very different sides to photograph.
There are the formal moments - awards, presentations, group photographs and people representing the company.
And then there are the moments in between.
The laughter.
The conversations.
The reactions.
The crazy group photographs.
The people simply enjoying themselves after months of hard work.
For the recent Reinhausen Asia-Pacific Sdn Bhd company dinner and award night, my brief was to capture both.

Photographing the formal moments - without making the evening feel too formal
Award nights naturally have plenty of important moments that need to be documented properly.
When someone receives an award, there is only one chance to get the photograph right.
The recipient needs to be visible. The people presenting the award need to be visible. The award itself needs to be visible. And, ideally, everyone should look good while doing it.
For these photographs, I used additional lighting to make sure the subjects were properly separated from the background while still retaining the atmosphere of the venue.
The objective isn't to make the photograph look like it was taken in a studio.
It is to make the event lighting and the people look good together.
Candid moments at a corporate dinner are important too.
The candid moments are just as important
Corporate event photography shouldn't be limited to people standing in front of a backdrop.
Some of the best photographs from a company dinner happen when nobody is expecting a photograph.
A conversation between colleagues.
Someone reacting to an award.
A table full of people laughing.
Or, in this case, an entire group deciding to go all out for the group photograph.
Those photographs help tell the story of what the event actually felt like.
And that's something I always look out for when photographing corporate events.
The challenge: Not enough light
The venue had a great atmosphere, but the available lighting wasn't ideal for photography.
There were decorative lights, screens and ambient lighting throughout the space, but relying entirely on those sources would have meant making compromises with exposure, shutter speed and image quality.
My solution was simple:
Bring my own light.
I used off-camera flash to supplement the existing lighting.
This gave me much more control over the exposure while allowing me to retain the ambient light and atmosphere of the venue.
That's an important distinction.
The goal wasn't to overpower the venue lighting.
The goal was to work with it.
This is where experience matters in event photography. Lighting conditions can change from one part of the venue to another, and there isn't always time to stop and set everything up like a studio shoot.
You have to assess the situation, make a decision and keep moving.
One event, different types of photographs
For a corporate dinner and award night, I generally look at the event as a combination of:
Formal award presentations
Group photographs
Executive and VIP photographs
Candid interactions
Table photographs
Reactions and audience moments
Entertainment and activities
Details that help tell the story of the event
The final collection should feel like more than a record of who attended.
It should give the company a visual record of what happened and how people experienced it.
And years from now, those candid photographs can sometimes become more valuable than the formal ones.
Because they bring the evening back to life.
