Sunset Photography at Masjid Kota Iskandar - A Revisit After Ten Years
Masjid Kota Iskandar - Aerial Shot
TL;DR:
I revisited Masjid Kota Iskandar, Johor, nearly a decade after my last shoot. The mosque sits within Johor’s administrative complex — an elegant mix of Islamic and Andalusian design. Shooting at sunset offered stunning color transitions but came with challenges: tight angles, limited movement, and a no-fly zone for drones. Still, I managed to capture a few frames - both ground and aerial - that truly show how the light hugs the structure.
The last time I visited Masjid Kota Iskandar was back in 2015, when the mosque had just been completed. It was pristine — white walls glowing under the newness of fresh paint, surrounded by the still-growing landscaping of the administrative capital.
Coming back after ten years, I wanted to see how time had changed it - and how the evening light would play across its domes and arches.
Returning to a Familiar Scene
Masjid Kota Iskandar - Aerial Shot
Masjid Kota Iskandar is located within Kota Iskandar, Iskandar Puteri, Johor, the state’s administrative center. The mosque forms part of a larger complex that houses the Chief Minister’s office and other government buildings. Its design is grand but peaceful - an architecture that balances authority and serenity.
I arrived late afternoon to scout compositions before sunset. The mosque’s massive prayer hall and symmetrical domes looked incredible against the descending light, but the challenge came quickly - very tight angles.
A tilt-shift lens would have been perfect to keep vertical lines straight, but I made do with my 14mm on a cropped body - wide enough to capture the full structure yet compact enough to handle easily around the marble steps.
Finding Angles in Tight Spaces

Space was my biggest limitation. The mosque’s courtyard and elevated platforms leave little room to back up, especially with its perimeter barriers. To get a clean, full view without heavy distortion, I had to stay low and compose deliberately — keeping the horizon balanced and the lines as straight as possible.
Sometimes, creative constraint forces better framing. That evening was one of those moments.
The Aerial Attempt
Before the light faded, I flew my drone to explore higher perspectives. The geometric layout of the surrounding gardens - everything looked magnificent from above.

But after a few quick aerial frames, a security guard politely approached and informed me the area is a government complex, making it a no-fly zone. I landed immediately, thankful for the brief window that allowed me to capture those elevated shots.
No complaints - I respect such restrictions, especially in official zones.
The Sunset Moment

When the sun dipped behind the horizon, the sky transformed - warm amber fading into purple. The mosque’s white façade reflected every tone. The marble floors mirrored the golden sky, creating a seamless symmetry between heaven and earth.
This was the light I came for.
I stayed until the last glow faded, soaking in the calmness that always follows a long, rewarding shoot.
Reflection & Growth
Coming back after a decade wasn’t just about revisiting a location. It was about revisiting myself as a photographer - how I frame, how I see, how I adapt.
The tight angles, the restricted drone access, even the changing color of the walls - all became part of the story. Photography isn’t just about perfect conditions; it’s about how you respond when the scene doesn’t go according to plan.
For Photographers Visiting Masjid Kota Iskandar

Arrive early - parking is ample, but light moves fast.
Respect the area’s security restrictions - it’s part of Johor’s government precinct.
A wide-angle lens (14–24mm equivalent) is your best friend here.
Stay after sunset - the soft twilight tones are worth it.
