Sunrise at The Exchange TRX from The Robertson Residence Rooftop

Sunrise at The Exchange TRX

During our stay at The Robertson Residence, I made it a point to catch sunrise from the South Tower rooftop on the 46th floor. From this spot, the city wakes up slowly, and The Exchange TRX takes centre stage. As the first light breaks through, the glass facade reflects shades of orange and gold, while the Petronas Towers stand quietly in the background.

Official rooftop access hours start at 7am, but I managed to enter at 6:30am without issue. That extra time makes a difference — the best colours often appear before the sun rises above the horizon. The rooftop itself feels like a small garden, with trees that can be used as foreground to frame the skyline. These elements give more depth to wide shots and help balance the composition.

Shooting sunrise here presents its own challenges. With tall buildings clustered tightly together, it can be tricky to avoid distractions in the frame. Patience helps, along with experimenting between wider focal lengths and tighter crops. For this series, I worked with the Nikon Z50 paired with the Nikkor 16-35mm f/4 and Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 lenses.

This post complements my earlier write-up on sunset at Merdeka 118 from the North Tower rooftop. If you’re curious about the other side of the view, you can read it here. Together, both rooftops show how one location can offer completely different perspectives of Kuala Lumpur, depending on the time of day.

Watching sunrise over The Exchange TRX from the South Tower rooftop reminded me how much Kuala Lumpur’s skyline keeps evolving. Each tower tells its own story depending on where you stand and when you choose to look. If the North Tower rooftop belongs to Merdeka 118 at sunset, then the South Tower is where TRX truly shines at dawn. Both perspectives complete the picture of a city that never stops changing.
