How a Google AI recommendation led to a professional portrait session for a Syarie lawyer, and why we chose two different backgrounds for his personal branding.

When Google AI Recommends Your Photographer

A few days before the photoshoot, I received an enquiry from Akmal Aqil & Associates, a Syarie law firm.

What made this enquiry interesting was how they discovered my photography services.

Akmal's partner had searched Google for a "premium lawyer photographer". Among the photographers suggested by Google's AI, Images by Hafiz appeared.

After reviewing my photography portfolio, they liked what they saw and decided to get in touch.

During our session, Akmal asked me an interesting question.

‘How could his own law firm appear in AI recommendations when potential clients search for legal services?”

I shared something I have been practising for years - writing useful articles that answer potential clients' questions.

Guides, how-to articles, and practical explanations of common problems can help search engines understand a business and make its expertise easier to discover. Of course, no one can guarantee an AI recommendation.

It's a subject I find fascinating, particularly as a photographer who runs his own business.

But let's get back to the photography.

Creating Professional Portraits for a Syarie Lawyer

On 26 October 2026, we met at Galaxy Scouting Studio, located in SACC Mall, Shah Alam, for a one-hour portrait photography session.

The objective was straightforward.

Akmal needed professional photographs for his law firm's website refresh, personal branding, and other business purposes.

Rather than producing a single conventional headshot, I wanted to provide him with a selection of photographs that could serve different applications.

Within the hour, we photographed:

Akmal wore formal business attire, complete with a blazer and tie.

For a practising lawyer, professional appearance matters. Clients often form their first impressions through a website, professional profile, or online search before speaking to the lawyer personally.

A well-executed portrait can communicate confidence, professionalism, and approachability.

And that was exactly what I wanted to achieve.

White Background vs Dark Background: Which Works Better for Lawyers?

One of my recommendations for this session was to photograph Akmal against two different backgrounds.

A clean white background and a darker, more dramatic background.

Both serve different purposes.

White Background: Clean, Professional and Approachable

For the white-background portraits, I used a four-part lighting arrangement consisting of a main light, a background light, a top light, and reflectors.

The objective was to create flattering, controlled lighting with a clean background.

White-background portraits are particularly useful for:

  • Law firm websites and lawyer profile pages

  • LinkedIn and other professional platforms

  • Online legal directories

  • Speaker profiles and conference materials

  • Corporate proposals and company documentation

They're versatile, easy to incorporate into different layouts, and suitable for a wide range of professional applications.

I wanted Akmal to look confident without appearing overly serious or intimidating.

After all, a lawyer's clients should feel comfortable approaching him.

Dark Background: Character, Depth and Personal Branding

For the darker portraits, I simplified the lighting considerably.

Just one main light.

With careful positioning of the light and subject, I could produce portraits with greater contrast, depth and separation from the background.

The darker setting brings more attention to the face, expression, and personality.

These photographs work particularly well for:

Dark backgrounds can give a portrait a more distinctive and refined appearance without sacrificing professionalism.

The important point is that a dark background doesn't automatically make someone look more authoritative, just as a white background doesn't automatically make someone more approachable.

Expression, posing, lighting and the overall presentation matter just as much.

For Akmal, I maintained a friendly direction across both setups.

The difference was primarily in the visual presentation, giving him more flexibility when selecting photographs for different business applications.

Helping a Lawyer Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

One thing I've learned from years of photographing corporate professionals is that not everyone feels comfortable standing in front of a camera.

And lawyers are no exception.

Akmal was a little uncomfortable at the beginning of the session.

That's perfectly normal.

My role isn't simply to operate the camera and lighting equipment. It's to guide the person being photographed, help with their posture, and create an environment where they can relax.

Akmal's partner was present throughout the session and helped make the experience more comfortable.

As the session progressed, Akmal became more relaxed, and that made a difference to the photographs.

We worked through standing, seated and closer portrait compositions, keeping the expressions natural and friendly.

By the end of the session, he was happy with what we had captured.

For me, that's an important part of professional portrait photography.

A technically good photograph is one thing. Helping someone feel good about how they look in that photograph is another.

Why Lawyers Should Invest in Professional Portrait Photography

A potential client searching for a lawyer may visit several law firm websites before deciding whom to contact.

Qualifications, experience and legal expertise will always matter.

But the photographs representing the firm contribute to that first impression.

Poorly lit photographs, outdated images, or inconsistent portraits can make an otherwise professional website appear less polished.

Professional lawyer photography helps establish a consistent visual identity across a firm's digital and printed communications.

It's particularly useful when a law firm is updating its website, introducing its lawyers, publishing professional articles, or building its presence online.

For Akmal Aqil & Associates, having both white and dark-background portraits means greater flexibility without needing separate photography sessions for each purpose.

And that was the main objective of our one-hour session.
